Week 10 College FootBlog 3rd & 1

Week 9 in college football saw two more teams fall from the ranks of the unbeaten, another shoot-out victory for Auburn and the stage is set for quite a showdown in Week 10.  College FootBlog tackles these topics and more in this week’s edition of our 3rd & 1.

1st:  Michigan State’s loss to Iowa sets the stage for a wild finish in the Big Ten The Hawkeyes’ drubbing of MSU brought Spartan fans back to reality last weekend.  While Michigan State will still have a special season, Iowa flexed their muscles and set the stage for what will likely be a 3-way tie for first in the Big Ten.  Iowa still has Ohio State coming to town on Nov. 20th, meaning one of those two will likely have one conference loss.  And if Michigan State and Wisconsin can take care of business the rest of the way, the conference championship game (which will be held in the 2011 season) will be one season too late.

2nd:  Auburn’s defense will eventually cost them.  As great as Cameron Newton has been, the Tigers do not have a championship defense.  Auburn currently ranks 57th in total defense, and that number will not cut it in their final 3-4 games.  Georgia is playing much better and gave Florida all they could handle, but the trip to Alabama for the Iron Bowl could be the end of their dream season.  Of the past seven BCS Champions, none finished below 10th in total defense.  If that trend continues, expect Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide (who boast the nation’s 11th ranked defense) to represent the SEC West in the SEC Championship Game next month.

3rd:  Mizzou falls victim to the week after hang over.  Just one week after knocking off previous #1 Oklahoma, Missouri was gashed by Roy Helu and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  That loss not only knocked the Tigers from the ranks of the unbeaten, but it also took them out of the driver’s seat for a Big 12 Championship Game.  Instead, expect the Huskers to represent the Big 12 North in the championship game in December.

….and 1:  Mountain West to host the game of the week.  as of Sunday night, this game was not even scheduled to be on national television, but now, ESPN’s College Gameday sets up this weekend in Salt Lake City.  This weekend’s #3 TCU at #5 Utah match up has all the makings of a great football game.  And who would have thought that a November game in the Mountain West could have such a large bearing on the BCS picture?   TCU boasts the nation’s top defense, while the Utes bring the nation’s 6th ranked defense.  Something’s got to give in this match up.  With both offenses having plenty of fire power as well, expect this one to come down to special teams.
